Question:
Rank the following purposes of government in order from least to most important. Provide evidence and examples of why you chose your particular order and why the most money should be spent on your top categories and least amount of money should be spent on the other categories. Explain why your chosen category is so vital to our lives and the best thing we can spend our money on. Explain who and what will be negatively affected by having to make cuts to your lower categories.  Pose a question to the class at the end related to your content.
Maintaining Social Order-  “Without government, civilized life would be impossible
Providing Public Services-  “The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do well for themselves” Lincoln
Providing National Security- Protecting  its national security is a major concern of a sovereign state.

Making economic decisions-  Ability to provide economic opportunities or resources.

  1. In my opinion, I think that we should spend most of our money on Social Order and Public Services. Why? Every once in a while a crime or a fire will occur and we need firefighters and policemen to help us. If we didn't have this or pay money towards it then who knows the police may not care as much if they're not being paid. I'm not saying there isn't good people out there, I'm just saying certain people are just in it for the money. We also need schools, hospitals, etc. We need this for education and for the ill people.
If I had to rank all four purposes of government from what is most important to what is least important, I would have to say maintaining social order is the top one. I know taxes and military are very important but the judicial system is also very important. I think if we ever had to cut Social Order it would affect a lot of people. Though we don’t always have crimes going on or robberies we still need policemen and firefighters to help us with that. If we lost our policemen, people might think of it as a way to commit more crimes because they could get away with more than they did before.
If we had to cut out Public Services, I think that people would die faster. What I mean by that is doctors wouldn’t be there to help the sick. It would also affect us a lot if we cut out National Security, because we need security to help us from terrorists and we if we didn’t have that, it would just make it easier for the terrorists to come to our country.
My question is do you agree with all that I said or do you disagree? Why?

    1. I agree with you, that maintaining social order is most important. We have to maintain social order for our "civilized" life, without maintaining "civilized life" would not be possible. So it needs to be our first priority and all other things will fall into place after this is taken care of.

I agree that social order and public services should be the first on the list and that they are most important to start a nation. But you will eventually need to eventually level out for any nation to survive a long healthy life. If I put national security for first on the list you will have protection but you will have nothing to protect, just anarchy and injustice. you can also reverse this roll and have the same out come but you will have something to protect and nothing to protect it.

  2. In my opinion, maintaining social order is first, providing social security is second, providing public services third, putting making economic decisions last. I think that maintaining social order is first, because “without government, civilized life would be impossible” and if this statement is true, which it mostly is, maintaining social order is most important because if we did not have “civilized” life we would not have any need for the other three things government offers us. The negatives to putting most of the money to “maintaining social order” would be that the government would control to many aspects of our everyday life and we, the people would not get as much privacy.
Now, putting “making economic decisions” on the end my list was not because I do not think it is important. I do, I just see more importance in the other three and believe they need to be priority before this. The government of course needs to make economic decisions and provide opportunities and resources for us. A negative to putting this at the bottom of the list would be, that we would not receive as many benefits as we do, nor would we have as many opportunities to thrive as I see it. But I do also see, that if this were at the top of the list, we wouldn’t have a safe country to live in. We may not be in constant fear of being attacked by another country but it would be on our minds more often than not making, we, the people feel unsafe. Also, we would not be civilized and we would want to fight and kill over everything. And, lastly, “The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do well for themselves” the government's purpose is to help us when we struggle to help ourselves.
Why do you think the government put these four before any else? Why are these so important to us?

    1. I think that the government put these four before any else because these four are what make a society work in my opinion. Social order, without it you would have chaos. No rules, no authority, people would just do what they wanted with no repercussions. Public services because people need schools and hospitals and police and without them more people would die, there would be less educated people and more crime. National security is also important because the military keeps our country safe. Making economic decisions is not as important in my opinion but in the list of top four because we need to pay our public services money or they would not do their jobs.

    2. I think he put these four before any else because they are main priorities in life, they are things that need to be in our world. If we didn't have them then the world and everyday living would be chaos. Maintaining Social Order was your top choice, I chose that second but that's beyond your question, so I agree with everything your saying and you make a very good point on asking why does the government put those first. These four options are very important to us, we need these to live so that we don't all go crazy. Making Economic Decisions was also my last choice because I could care less about taxes and what not. But we do need them because we also get good benefits from it.

  3. I think that maintaining social order is the most important because without social order there would probably be a lot of chaos. Things wouldn’t run as smoothly as they do now. So first we would need order within the people. Second I think that providing national security is important as well because we need our country to be fought for to be made safe from other countries. Public services are important but I think they aren't as important as the first two because we can figure that out after people have come to order and I think making economic decisions is probably the least of our worries. No one likes taxes anyway. But making cuts to the public services may mean that schools get shut down or water isn't as easy to come by in a home. But in my opinion there needs to be order before schools can be in business or before any businesses can start running properly. You can't have a bunch of first graders running the classroom. How could anything work well if there is no Social Order?

    1. Answering the question above, I think having Social Order keeps us sane in a way. Meaning we need rules to have a good society. Without Social Order everything would go wild. I think there would be more crimes and people would be worse more than they are today. Not everyone would have each other’s back, they would just be looking out for their self. I’m not saying not having Social Order wouldn't work, I’m just saying it would be way more difficult than it is today.

    2. I believe that the maintenance of social order is a necessity. Without it, nothing really would work well. Instantly, what comes to mind when I think of a world without social order is The Purge. I genuinely believe that without law enforcement, etc., the events of The Purge would occur daily. I don’t think that all people would partake in the chaos, but there are some very twisted people in the world, and there are far more than one may be aware of- without social order, the nation would cease to be a safe place.

  4. The purposes of government, ordered from least important to most important in my perspective, are providing public services, maintaining social order, providing national security, and making national decisions. I believe that it is most important for the government to provide public services because hospitals and schools are, in my opinion, the most vital institutions in our world. Well-being and education should be the government’s top priority because without proper attention to these conventions, our nation would be full of sick, unscholarly people. I chose the maintenance of social order as the second most important because our society would cripple without it. Unlawful, unjust things would happen constantly, and they would cease to result in the appropriate persecution. I chose providing national security next for reasons that I think should be obvious; it’s crucial to be protected & secure. Making cuts to this area could result in loss of jobs, as well as loss of interest in jobs in this field. Making economic decisions is the least important on my list because although it is important to have a thriving economy, it isn’t exactly necessary for the government to have control over this domain. Making cuts in this area would obviously result in the loss of jobs, as well as more responsibility on the people to make these decisions.
In your own words, why should education and hospitality be valued higher than taxes & imported/exported good?

The order in which I determined these should go is maintaining social order. After that the next important service is national security because we want to protect what we have and what we have earned. Next is public services because this is going to take a long time and we want to keep our future generations on the same track as we were on. And last of all is the effort of making economic decisions.
I declared that the most important thing is maintaining social order. If you want to have a government you must have people to govern but to even begin to do that you have to have something you want to protect or you would just go somewhere else. So to have to begin with a group of civilized people that all have the same goal. After you be sure that all the people are happy with what they have and feel safe where they are at, you now have something to defend. which then you would get into the next service which would be national security and public services. The least amount of money goes to economic decisions because it does not require a lot of money. It is purely just an effort to decide for the economy because you need more education to make better economic decisions. If you do not have social order you will have bigger problems.
The positive side to this would obviously be that most of everyone living there would be happy knowing crime is off of the streets. To add on to that people would be a lot safer and you would worry about people breaking into your home then getting away with it. I think everybody would be happier over all. But the negative things would be that you have less money to protect the entire nation less school budget and less budget to economic decisions which I don't think need much money anyways for economic decisions anyways. another bad thing is now you have something to protect which would lead more money to national security, most people are going to complain and get public services up there so it wouldn't matter anyways. Unless we are talking about this staying permanently, then it really would not matter because they will fall if you do not balanced it out eventually. So my answer over all is a nation will never survive unless the 4 things are balanced out accordingly.
My question is, do you think a nation can survive with most of the budget going to one service? Why?

    1. Probably not, the other services would fail quickly and the United States would turn to chaos.

I think that if you put all your money in one services it would not work, but if you were to break it all up evenly it would be better in my honest opinion.

  6. I believe that making Economic Decisions might be at the top, due to the fact that without making proper decisions with economics none of the other reasons are going to be balanced. Next would be providing National Security because without a strong military the country would be overrun by terrorists or other national enemies that might try to do us harm, causing little to no social order. Social Order would be the next because without having a Social Order than it would make it difficult to have Public Services.
The negatives are that Social Order as well as Public Services would be deprived of attention compared to the others which might cause loss in funds and or termination of services.

I personally believe that all of these purposes are actually equally as important as the other, does anyone else agree if so why or why not?

  7. While I believe all of the purposes of government are important, I do think that some are more important than others. In my opinion the most important is easily their responsibility to make economic decisions. Without having a strong economy the government wouldn’t be able to do a lot, if any, of their other responsibilities. Heres why: Maintaining Social Order would be difficult if the government couldn’t afford to pay cops, judges, etc for their services. The only people who would do it would be volunteers, and even then it is even easier to corrupt than it is now. Second, providing public service. Again, everything costs money. Without enough money to go around schools would be slim pickings, again with only volunteers, and in my opinion an uneducated country is a dangerous one, which gives me into their next responsibility: National security. The United States has spent $7.6 trillion dollars since the attacks on September 1st, 2001 on homeland security and defense. If the economy were to lapse in competency, the United States budget for war would disappear quickly.

What do you think the United States would be able to accomplish if they didn’t put so much money towards war?

    1. In my opinion it would be that a government would not be able to do much of anything due too the fact that if there was not a strong military than we would be a weak nation, and unable to defend ourselves properly.

    2. -Dylan- We would probably be able to accomplish making new inventions and help better the states individually. But why do that if your country is unsafe and threatened by other countries?

  8. I think providing national security is the most important, maintaining social order is second, providing public services is third, and making economic decisions is least important. I chose providing national security as the most important because if you don’t have a safe place to live and is always threatened, then all the other purposes wouldn’t matter. Most of our money should be spent on national security because it benefits everybody. The least amount of money should be spent on making economic decisions because although everybody benefits from it, we can be self sufficient and can make all our own decisions. By providing national security, everybody is safe, and should have no worry about threats from other countries. By putting most of the money toward this would definitely make the other choices less effective.
How would putting most of the money toward providing national security be a bad idea?

    1. Pumping to much money into national security could end badly if the government ever turned on its people because the government controls our national security. There's also a point where you put to much money out and it lines the pockets of corrupt officials and/or the money just gets wasted.

  9. My idealistic order begins with maintaining social order, moves to providing national security, then providing the public services, and lastly making the economic decisions. Power of the economy should not completely rest in the governments hands because it is simply too much power, for example when they got rid of the gold that backed every dollar which has caused the value of the dollar to decrease constantly, or the way that taxpayer money is lining the pockets of people who enter the U.S. illegally and collect child support instead of supplying veterans who actually protected the citizens of the U.S. with help for P.T.S.D. or their financial situations. Public services are something that are and aren’t necessary, theres a point where its to much money wasted on it, money is wasted on wind generators for example which are overpriced and inefficient when it comes to meeting the public’s demands. National security is second most important because lets face it we need to be safe from attacks from foreign invaders, its not the most important however because we need a stable system within the country itself. National security is also important because there needs to be a military with many ranks and a organized system to combat enemies. That brings me to maintaining social order, this is most important because without order there is no country and the other things wouldn’t exist. Without social order the country would be in an uproar with crime on the rise and really no government, or a dictatorship.

The negatives to my order would be, although positives in my views, that people who “need” money would no longer receive it and would have to actually find a job, taxpayers/citizens would have to find a better system for managing the money(economy) and where it is spent, more than likely by voting. Our social order and military would be getting the most support which in my opinion are the essentials.

Why do you agree or disagree with my idealistic order and ideas?

  10. I think Maintaining Social order is the most important of all of the following categories. Without government, maintaining civilized life would be impossible because we need a set of guidelines and rules to live amongst each other. Without them, people would be capable of doing inhumane and unjust things and being able to get away with it. Maintaining social order also includes law enforcement and firefighters, which helps keep our communities safe. On the downside of placing maintaining social order first is that the government would have more control over anything in our everyday lives.
Next I think providing national security is the next most important due to having a military. Without out military, other countries would be seen as a threat and we would possibly be in danger as a country. We would also most likely be under another countries rule because they would be able to take us over without a military. I don't really find there is a negative side to providing national security.
Providing public services would be next. I think it is important that everyone is able to attend school and and be able to take public transportation if needed. Without public services, water and electricity would not be running throughout homes. There would most likely be more car accidents due to absence of streetlights as well. I think providing public services is positive towards everyone.
Making economic decisions is the least important of the four. Without this, we would not be paying taxes, which would lead to lesser money for public services.
Do you agree or disagree that maintaining social order is the most important of all four?
